Climate actions
Enhance operational safety in inshore operations
Objective
Enhance safety for ports and processing activities.Description
A list of potential measures to be implemented includes:
- construction of dykes and embankments to protect infrastructures;
- establishment of port emergency procedures with dedicated and trained staff;
- actions focussed on increasing port resilience and protecting strategic components (e.g. changes in the design of the infrastructure and in the materials used);
- inland relocation of processing sites.
Adaptation approaches for seaports include infrastructure elevation to compensate for projected sea level rise, construction of storm defence systems and seaport relocation.
Expected results
Protect seaports from flooding.Result indicators
Percentage of damage avoided [%]Involved actors
Fishery and aquaculture agencies, port authorities and public bodies with competence on safety at sea (coastguards) and establishing regulations and standards, local communities, fish farms or port management operators.Expected timeline for action
- Short term (1-4 years)
Best practices
Criticalities
The long-term time frame of climate change projections are hardly compatible with the shorter investment time frame of maritime business.
